Search the library catalog for books about your country then use the index to drill down to a specific topic. Especially helpful is the Reader series (Mexico Reader, Guatemala Reader, etc.).
Also in the library is the Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture, which offers great overviews of countries and people (published in 1996).
